Biography

Karen Sommer Shalett is a strategic communications leader, storyteller and advisor with a career spanning global nonprofits, academic institutions and journalism. She has held senior communications roles at the Aspen Institute, Population Services International, Templeton World Charity Foundation, and Tulane University, where she has led initiatives that translate complex ideas into clear, compelling narratives in service of public understanding and impact.

Beginning her career as a journalist for local, regional and global publications, Karen developed a strong editorial foundation that continues to shape her work. She is known for combining that editorial instinct with strategic rigour, helping mission-driven organisations navigate moments of change, elevate their voice and engage diverse audiences with clarity and purpose.

Karen’s work is grounded in a commitment to advancing human dignity, education and cross-cultural understanding. She believes in the power of storytelling not just to inform, but to build empathy, amplify underrepresented perspectives, and strengthen more connected and resilient communities.

She and her husband, Scott, are extremely proud of their two sons, who are pursuing their education in environmental policy and social justice respectively.
